Police investigating suspicious Sandy Bay fire

Police are investigating a fire at an unoccupied residence in Quayle Street, Sandy Bay this afternoon.

Police and emergency services responded to the fire shortly after 1:30pm, finding the house well alight on arrival.

Tasmania Fire Service crews were able to quickly bring the fire under control, however as the house has not been occupied for several years and was in a state of disrepair, the residence is likely to be demolished. No one was injured in the incident.

While fire scene investigators are still on the scene conducting examinations into the cause of the fire, members of the community had reported seeing a group of young men acting suspiciously in the area about the same time.

Police located two youths and an 18-year-old man nearby a short time after the incident. The trio is currently assisting police with their enquiries.

Anyone who may have seen people acting suspiciously in the Quayle Street area around the time of the fire is asked to contact Hobart CIB on 131 444.

Motorists who might have relevant dash cam footage are also asked to contact police.
