Police issue reminder after spate of deliberately lit fires in South Coast

Police are issuing a reminder to the public to remain vigilant following reports of a number of deliberately lit fires on the South Coast.

Between 11pm Saturday night (24 August 2019) and 1am Sunday morning (25 August 2019) police allege an unknown person lit a number of fires across Bomaderry.

The fires were lit in the front gardens of residences on Meroo Road, Bunberra Street, Kahlua Crescent, West Birillie Street and Tarawal Street.

About 4pm yesterday (Sunday 25 August 2019) a 14-year-old boy was arrested after allegedly lighting a grass fire on Plunkett Street, Nowra.

The boy was dealt with under the Young Offenders Act and issued a caution notice.

South Coast Police District Officer in Charge, Inspector Ray Stynes is urging the community to remain vigilant, particularly in the lead up to bushfire season.

“We are working hard with other emergency services to respond to and prevent these fires from occurring in the first place,” Insp Stynes said.

“It’s distressing to see so many fires being deliberately lit, particularly after a dry winter period.

“I want to urge members of the community – if you see something, say something.

“We will continue to work hard to stop these people who are putting lives at risk. This is a timely reminder that if you are lighting fires, you will be dealt with by the full brunt of the law.”

Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact Nowra Police Station on (02) 4421 9699 or call Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au.

Information is treated in strict confidence.
