Police lay charges over property offences at Yarrawonga

Northern Territory Police have arrested two men for property offences following two separate incidents at a Yarrawonga business over the weekend.

At about 4:00am on Saturday 6 June, a 35-year-old man allegedly forced entry into the business. Detectives from Strike Force Trident (SFT), Dog Operations Unit (DOU), and Palmerston general duties (GD’s) quickly responded and located the man.

He was arrested and charged with:

  • damage to property
  • unlawful entry – building
  • stealing.

The second incident occurred at about 4:00am on Sunday 7 June. A 31-year-old man attempted to gain access to the location however was unsuccessful. He attempted to gain access at another entry point which activated a security alarm and caused him to flee. Officers from SFT, DOU and Palmerston GD’s responded, and the man was arrested nearby after being tracked by the DOU.

The man was charged with:

  • damage to property
  • unlawful entry – building.

Both men are due to appear in Darwin Local Court today.

Acting Commander Sachin Sharma said, “Due to the security measures at the business, police were notified of the incidents as they occurred and acted swiftly, resulting in the arrests of offenders in both incidents.

“Police continue to work collaboratively with key partner agencies to prevent crime, proving beneficial results. This is reflected in the Northern Territory crime statistics ending in March 2020 which showed a 40.5% drop in commercial break-ins when compared to the same time last year.”
