Police make arrest – Alcohol Protected Area – Kakadu National Park

Northern Territory Police have arrested a 22-year-old male in relation to alcohol and traffic offences on Thursday 22 November, 2019.

At about 6:45pm, members from Jabiru Police Station were conducting traffic operations within Kakadu National Park when the male was apprehended and subjected to a road side breath test. A positive result, over the prescribed legal limit, was returned. It was subsequently discovered the male provided a false name and he did not hold a driver’s licence.

Members also located and seized cannabis and a significant amount of alcohol, including 30 litres of spirits, with a value of approximately $1,800.00. It is believed this alcohol was being transported to Gunbalanya (Oenpelli).

The 22-year-old male was charged with:

  • Drive low range blood alcohol content
  • Drive a motor vehicle unlicensed
  • Furnish false details to members
  • Possess cannabis
  • Bring / supply liquor Alcohol Protected Area
  • Possess plates calculated to deceive

The four passengers in the vehicle, aged 19, 20 and two aged 27, were each issued an infringement for bringing liquor into an Alcohol Protected Area.

Acting Commander Hege Burns said, “Substance abuse affects everyone, so any seizure large or small helps us keep a safer community. If you know of anyone or have information about persons bringing liquor into our alcohol protected communities please call police”.
