Police make arrest – Armed man in Alice Springs

A 50-year-old man has been arrested by Northern Territory Police following an incident in Alice Springs overnight.

Police responded to a report of a man armed with a knife at a unit complex on Gnoliya Street just before midnight.

Officers attended the residence and knocked on the door when it is alleged the man exited the unit armed with a large hunting style knife.

Through the effective use of verbal commands and appropriate operational safety tactics the man was able to be safely arrested without injury to him or the responding officers.

The man will appear before the Alice Springs Local Court today.

Alice Springs Division, Superintendent Brett Prowse praised the prompt, professional and well planned response to this high risk incident.

“Our members are often responding to events that place their safety and at time lives in jeopardy, to ensure the safety of the Alice Springs community,” said Supt Prowse.

“The attending officers response to this incident clearly displayed good communication, prior planning and a real commitment to keeping nearby residents and the offender safe, and they should be commended.”
