Police make arrest – Drink driving in Alice Springs 17 February

Northern Territory Police have arrested a 30-year-old male for drink driving related offences in Alice Springs earlier this morning.

Police will allege just after 10am, the Southern Traffic Operations Unit stopped the male on Scott Terrace after an Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) alert that his car may be unregistered and uninsured since late last year.

The male was visibly intoxicated when spoken to and was arrested for a breath analysis that returned a reading of 0.171, more than 3 times the legal limit.

He was also subject of a 5 year licence disqualification.

He was later charged with:

  • Drive with high range breath alcohol concentration
  • Drive a motor vehicle whilst disqualified
  • Drive an uninsured motor vehicle
  • Drive an unregistered motor vehicle.

He was bailed to appear in the Alice Springs Local Court at a later date.

Sergeant Conan Robertson said: “There is automated number plate technology on police cars in Alice Springs, it alerts Police if vehicles are unregistered or uninsured. It is important that people check the registration status of vehicles before they drive them as there are expensive fines that apply.”

“On this occasion the unregistered and uninsured car was just the start, this driver’s recklessness included a level of drunkenness that puts all road users at risk, not by mistake it was a thoughtless and selfish decision.”

“The car had 4 occupants and it is frustrating that people continue to get into vehicles with drink drivers, we can no longer accept this from friends and family, we must work together as a community to stop it.”
