Police make arrest – Traffic offences in Darwin CBD

Northern Territory Police have arrested a 48-year-old male for traffic offences in the Darwin CBD this morning.

Shortly before 8:00am, police received a report that a maroon Holden Commodore sedan was being driven in a dangerous and erratic manner. The driver allegedly ran a red light on the wrong side of the road and continued driving, fishtailing with a flat tyre.

Responding police located the vehicle on Mitchell Street and activated emergency lights and siren indicating the driver should pull over. The driver failed to abide by this direction and drove into a nearby carpark and through a mesh fence before crashing into another parked vehicle in an adjacent car park.

The driver refused to engage with police and walked towards a nearby supermarket at which time additional responding officers arrested him.

The male was conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital for the purpose of blood analysis testing before being taken to Palmerston Watch House where he remains in custody.

Charges are expected to be laid later today.

Any witnesses who were in the vicinity of Daly Street, The Esplanade or Mitchell Street between 7:45am and 8:00am and observed this vehicle are urged to contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Please quote reference 9321911.
