Police make arrests – Disturbances in Alice Springs 19 January

Northern Territory Police responded to an aggravated assault with a weapon in the Alice Springs CBD this morning.

Around 9am, police received a report of a male being hit with an edged weapon at a shopping centre near Gregory Terrace.

Police attended shortly after and located a 31-year-old man with a head laceration who was taken for treatment at Alice Springs Hospital.

Detectives from Regional Crime are reviewing CCTV and speaking to witnesses attempting to identify an adult male wanted in connection with the assault.

A description will be released as the investigation progresses.

Later, at around 10:25 AM police received reports of a large disturbance near Gregory Terrace and Hartley Street involving blunt and edged weapons.

Police attended and arrested three adults, a 42-year-old male, a 41-year-old male and a 38-year-old female.

During the arrest of the 42-year-old male, police deployed a taser to gain subject control.

Acting Assistant Commissioner James Gray-Spence said “There is no excuse for the violence seen on the streets of Alice Springs this morning.

“These disturbances would have been distressing to bystanders and members of the public who were in the area at the time.

“I want to thank the members of the community who called us and enabled our officers to swiftly respond.

“I want to commend the police and other emergency services who responded to these disturbances and took immediate action.

“We urge anyone who witnessed the violence today, especially if you have footage, to make contact on 131 444.”
