Police make arrests – Stolen motor vehicles in Alice Springs 20 February

Northern Territory Police have arrested 10 youths after a number of vehicles were stolen in Alice Springs yesterday.

At 11:30pm, police received reports that an unknown group of youths unlawfully entered a premises on the Stuart Highway, Stuart. Two Toyota Prado’s and two Toyota Hilux’s were stolen from the location.

Strike Force Viper, Southern Dog Operations, Drone Unit and general duties all deployed.

A short time later, one of the Prado’s was observed driving dangerously throughout the CBD before a tyre deflation device was deployed successfully, and the vehicle came to stop on Kurrajong Drive.

Ten offenders were arrested at the scene.

Eight offenders, aged between 13 and 19, remain in custody assisting police with enquiries.

Two 10-year-olds were released into the care of responsible adults.

Detective Senior Sergeant Rob Kent said “Strike Force Viper are continuing to investigate the thefts, with the two Hilux’s being recovered abandoned overnight.

“Driving an overcrowded, stolen vehicle is not only dangerous to everyone inside it, it’s also dangerous for everyone on the roads and the police that have to respond to it. It’s lucky that no one was injured.

“We are continuing to urge the community to report any incidents of dangerous driving to 131 444 or in an emergency to call Triple Zero. You can also make an anonymous report through Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”
