A police officer will be stationed permanently at Cradle Mountain National Park for the first time following a successful trial earlier this year as part of the Government’s commitment to keeping Tasmanians safe.
Constable Elmar Van Breda will operate from the Cradle Mountain gateway precinct to undertake general duties including public safety, crime, traffic policing and emergency management.
This appointment will have a significant impact on public safety and emergency management through increased police presence in this busy yet remote location.
Prior to COVID-19, Cradle Mountain was one of Tasmania’s most visited attractions by visitors to our state and we don’t expect this to be any different once travellers are able to tour our regions again.
Tasmanians now holidaying at home due to COVID-19 has seen an increase in popularity of the location, meaning the importance of a permanent police presence is higher than ever.
The trial ran from January until March this year, with Tasmania Police receiving positive feedback and results from both key stakeholders and members of the public.
The initiative has been made possible through the continued support and collaboration with the Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Services.
The Government is committed to ensuring Tasmania Police has the resources needed to protect our communities and keep Tasmanians safe, which includes delivering an additional 125 front line officers over four years.
