Police responding to fatal traffic crash at Lawes

A person has died following a two vehicle traffic crash at Lawes in the Lockyer Valley overnight.

Preliminary information indicates around 10.40pm a red 1999 Mitsubishi lancer sedan and a green 2002 Toyota avalon sedan were travelling westbound on the Warrego Highway when a collision has occurred just past the John Howie Memorial Drive/University Campus exit.

Two occupants from the Mitsubishi sustained critical injuries, and were immediately provided expert care by two off duty doctors who pulled over to assist ahead of the emergency response. Despite the best efforts of the doctors and the first responders, the passenger from this vehicle died at the scene.

The driver of the Mitsubishi was airlifted from the scene in a critical condition.

Police are working to establish the identities of the pair.

Two occupants from the Avalon sustained serious injuries and were transported by road to hospital.

The highway has been closed in both directions between Lawes and Steinhardts Road with local diversions in place via Glenore Grove for west-bound traffic and is expected to reopen by 6am.

Forensic Crash Unit investigators are appealing for witnesses, especially those with dashcam vision of the crash, or the moments leading up to it to come forward.
