Police responding to traffic crash at Belmont

Police investigating a serious traffic crash at Belmont earlier this month are appealing for information that could identify the driver of a dark grey utility with a distinctive cage-back and carrying a large tan dog.

Around 10am on Monday April 11, the utility was travelling southbound on the Gateway Motorway and lost a 2.5m x 1.2m piece of sheet metal from its canopy, causing the driver of a blue Mazda 626 travelling behind to take evasive action, swerving into the side barrier of the motorway. A white Pantech truck crashed into the rear of the vehicle immediately after.

The woman and a male passenger in the Mazda sustained serious injuries and were provided immediate first aid by a passing motorist, ahead of the arrival of paramedics. The driver of the truck was not physically injured.

The utility was observed pulling into the emergency stopping bay of the highway just prior to the crash and was seen on an adjacent service road soon after the crash.

Witnesses, especially those with dashcam footage capturing the moments leading up to and including the crash are urged to come forward.

Police are appealing to the driver of the utility, or anyone who can identify them to come forward.
