Police seek information after suspicious grass fires in Monaro

Police are investigating a spate of suspicious grass fires in the state’s alpine region.

Between 6.40pm and 9.45pm on Sunday (18 December 2022), five grass fires along the roadways at Crackenback, East Jindabyne, Avonside and Varney’s Range – all within 45km of each other – were reported to police.

The first fire occurred on Alpine Way, Crackenback about 6.40pm, with the second at 9pm along Kosciuszko Road, East Jindabyne.

Soon after, along the same road, a third fire was reported near Geikle Creek Road.

Around 9.10pm, a grass fire was located near an equestrian centre at Avonside, before the fifth fire occurred on Kosciuszko Road, Varney’s Range.

NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) members attended and extinguished all five fires.

The fires have not cause major damage and there are no reports of injury.

Officers attached to Monaro Police District established crimes scenes and are investigating whether the fires – which are believed to have been deliberately lit – are linked.
