Port Phillip Crime Investigation Unit detectives are appealing for public assistance following an attempted robbery where a man was seriously assaulted in St Kilda last month.
It is believed the victim, a 34-year-old man was sitting on a bench outside O’Donnell Gardens on the St Kilda Esplanade at about 9.45pm, on 21 February, when he was approached by an offender who stole headphones off his head.
Investigators have been told the victim chased the offender down Acland Street before stopping and returning to the bench to get his e-bike.
As the victim began to wheel his bike away, the offender returned and made demands to the victim for his bike before pushing him over and punching him whilst he was on the ground.
Investigators have been told the offender then took the bike and began walking away, however was followed by the victim.
It is believed the offender again assaulted the victim before stomping on the bike and causing significant damage.
Officers were told that a member of the public pulled their vehicle up along side the curb which startled the offender who then fled on foot.
The male offender is described as Caucasian in appearance, aged between 40 and 50-years-old, about 185cm tall and was wearing a white t-shirt with a WWF logo and a blue baseball cap.
Investigators have released a digital image of a man they believe can assist with their enquiries and in the hope anyone who witnessed the assault or has information will come forward.
It is understood the offender was with another man who was described as approximately 30-years-old, perceived to be of Pacific Islander/Maori appearance and was wearing all black.
