Police seek witnesses – Vehicle crash and assault – Northern suburbs

Northern Territory Police are calling for information in relation to a vehicle crash which occurred earlier this morning.

Around 5:30am, police received a report that a taxi driver was assaulted and had his taxi stolen in Coconut Grove.

The taxi company was able to notify police of the location of the taxi using tracking technology. Police found the vehicle and conducted a traffic apprehension however the vehicle failed to stop. Police conducted a short vehicle pursuit along Dick Ward Drive however lost sight of the vehicle.

A short time later, police located the taxi which had struck a pole and run off the embankment on Dick Ward Drive near Douglas Street, Ludmilla. A female was located underneath the vehicle with head injuries and was removed shortly before the vehicle set alight. She was conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital for treatment.

A crime scene was declared on Dick Ward Drive. The Major Crash Investigation Unit and Strike Force Trident are investigating.
