Police target road safety after high number of fatalities in Logan District

Logan Police are putting the spotlight on road safety as part of a new local initiative ‘Operation Own It’ which officially launched today (November 18) during National Road Safety Week.

The proactive campaign comes as Logan has so far recorded the largest increase in road fatalities of any district in the state with 19 lives lost so far this year – 16 more than 2019.

Chief Superintendent Brian Swan said with more locals predicted to take to the roads during the Schoolies period and the lead up to Christmas, the district was taking a proactive approach to encouraging road users to own their driving behaviour no matter the purpose of their trip in Logan.

“Logan District is really diverse, taking in the area from Springwood, right down to the Queensland and New South Wales border in Rathdowney,” Chief Superintendent Swan said.

“We know as we come into this holiday period that we will have more people out on the road enjoying popular tourist and sight-seeing destinations and passing through other areas.

Like at this RBT site, officers will be putting the spotlight on road safety in coming weeks

“Our officers will be out, conducting high-visibility roadside operations and they will be engaging in conversation at every opportunity, about road safety in Logan.

“We’ve already seen the impact of far too many serious traffic crashes here in Logan, and we want to make sure we and the community are working together to keep our roads safe.”

  • Senior Constable Holley

Senior Constable Meagan Holley of Loganholme Police Station said this operation is seeing frontline officers throughout the district, expanding their usual interactions with community members.

“We will be initiating further conversations with our community members and really working on ways to bring road safety in our unique district to the forefront of everyone’s’ minds,” Senior Constable Holley said.

“It can be something drivers become complacent about, but we are reminding everyone that you can’t.

“For us all to see a positive impact, we all need to work together.”

Chief Superintendent Swan said the operation was about making a positive attitude change to deter crime and optimise road safety for Logan residents and visitors.

“This operation is about proactively working on the ongoing issues affecting community members; and consequently police, in Logan,” Chief Superintendent Swan said.

This operation will see officers talking about road safety at every opportunity with community members

Whether you’re commuting to work, driving to visit friends and family or headed out for a day of adventure in the Scenic Rim, Logan Police want you to get there safely and are asking you to:
