Police update: Search for escapee at Townsville

A 23-year-old man who escaped from a prison farm in Townsville on October 7 has been taken into custody.

Just before 12:30pm today, members of the public sighted the man near Balls Lane and gave chase.

Police, who were patrolling the area, arrived quickly and took the man into custody.

It is believed that the man was involved with a group of people who were driving stolen cars dangerously around Townsville earlier in the day.

There are no further details in relation to this incident at this stage.

Police have charged the 23-year-old man with escape lawful custody and trespass with further charges likely.

He is expected to appear Townsville Magistrates Court tomorrow.
