Position Vacant: Safety and Training Officer

Permanent Full Time Position

An exceptional opportunity is available for a self-starter who is interested in taking a lead role in safety and training with one of Australia’s most effective, respected and influential trade unions, the Maritime Union of Australia, a Division of Construction Forestry Maritime Mining & Energy Union.

Based in Sydney and working across Australia, you will be the primary Safety Officer and have responsibility to develop and coordinate training programs across the Union.

Reporting to the Assistant National Secretary and working closely with Branch Officials and organising leaders, the role is interesting and varied with responsibilities including, but not limited to:

  • Developing and implementing the MUA’s National Safety strategy
  • Providing advice to MUA Officials, HSRs and delegates on safety issues, disputes and campaigns
  • Building Union capacity to organise and campaign around safety
  • Acting as MUA’s Safety Representative with external parties
  • Coordinating the MUA’s National Training Program
  • Building and coordinating a national training team
  • Liaising with ACTU and other training providers
  • Developing business cases for training funding
  • Working with MUA Safety Consultants in the diving sector

To be considered for this role, it is essential that you will have:

  • Certificate IV in Training and Assessment or equivalent experience in Union education
  • an understanding of Union organising and campaigning
  • excellent training skills with a focus on practical and interactive adult learning
  • a general knowledge of the maritime industry
  • a deep knowledge of the technical and legal requirements in respect to safety
  • a solid understanding of the rights and powers of HSRs and the power to organise around safety
  • a generic understanding of industrial legal parameters
  • excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • a proactive and organised approach demonstrating a sound work ethic and ability to prioritise and plan
  • a willingness to work as a member of a team
  • well-developed analytical and research skills

In addition, it is preferable that you possess the relevant skills to fulfill the requirements of the role:

  • Certificate IV in Workplace Health and Safety or equivalent experience as a safety practitioner
  • high level of computer literacy:
    • advanced level MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel & Outlook);
    • intermediate level database;
