Positive ABS dwelling approvals data means more homes for Tasmanian families

Nic Street, Minister for Housing and Construction

The latest Australian Bureau of Statistics building approval data, released today, show that Tasmania recorded the highest growth in the monthly number of dwelling unit approvals nationwide.

The total number of dwelling approvals for the month of September in Tasmania improved by 4.5% when compared with August.

The same measure, at a national level, posted a drop of 0.7% compared with the previous month.

Tasmania’s monthly result was the strongest of all States and Territories.

Minister for Housing and Construction, Nic Street, welcomed the positive news and said it demonstrated the Rockliff Liberal Government’s plan to increase housing supply was working.

“We should never lose sight of the fact that these numbers are more than just statistics. Each approval is another opportunity to put a roof over the heads of a Tasmanian family,” Minister Street said.

“Typically, Labor has gone silent about these results, and no relentlessly negative media statement has been issued – because this is good news.

“The Rockliff Liberal Government is playing its part and increasing housing supply to address the needs of vulnerable people by providing safe and secure accommodation for Tasmanians.

“On top of this welcome news, there are a further 860 long term homes and units in the Homes Tasmania construction pipeline in various phases of development, which also means ongoing jobs and growth in our economy.

“Unlike the consistently negative Labor Party, the Rockliff Liberal Government is getting on with the job of delivering more homes and more support to make it easier for all Tasmanians to get into a safe and secure home.”
