Positive signs of jobs growth in new industries, but more work to be done

Despite global and national economic headwinds, the latest ABS job stats show that 8,400 jobs have been created since March 2018, with the trend unemployment rate for November remaining steady.

There was a marginal (0.1 per cent) increase in the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for November to 6.3 per cent which is explained by the slight increase in the seasonally adjusted participation rate.

“Growing the economy and jobs is the central focus of the Marshall Liberal Government, and while we welcome the fact there has been solid employment growth since March 2018, we know there is much more work to be done to ensure there are more jobs and opportunities for South Australians in the coming months and years,” Minister for Innovation and Skills David Pisoni said.

“We are driving positive jobs growth today through lowering costs for businesses in SA – including the abolition of payroll tax for all small businesses and by reducing the top land tax rate from a national high 3.7 per cent to just 2.4 per cent.

“We are also investing massively in a $12.9 billion pipeline of infrastructure projects, but we are also ensuring we have the skilled workforce required for the future through Skilling South Australia.

“Other positive economic indicators include the growth in private new capital expenditure in SA, which was up 6.1 per cent in the September quarter when compared to the March quarter 2018 and was 36.7 per cent higher than three years earlier.

“ABS data also indicates that over the year to August 2019 the average number of job vacancies in South Australia was 38.9 per cent higher than five years earlier.

“According to the latest SEEK Employment Report, SA recorded the highest growth in average advertised salaries for job vacancies of all the mainland states when comparing November 2019 with November 2018 – up 2.8 per cent in seasonally adjusted terms.

“SEEK also noted the industries recording strong jobs growth in SA were design and architecture, consulting and strategy, science and technology, insurance and superannuation, and education and training.

“This illustrates the importance of new and emerging industries and the transition that the South Australian economy is undergoing while delivering more jobs and new career pathways.

“Our Skilling South Australian program is yielding positive results in terms of job outcomes and skilling the future workforce, with recent data from the NCVER showing that SA had a 28.8 per cent increase in government funded apprentices and trainees, the largest percentage increase in the nation.

“The NCVER’s release on apprentices and trainee numbers for the June quarter for 2019 showed a 19.4 per cent increase in commencements for the three months compared to the same period last year.”
