Pregnant cow rescued from Oakville dam

A pregnant cow was rescued from a muddy dam at Oakville by NSW State Emergency Service volunteers on Saturday night.

Deputy Commander of the NSW SES Hawkesbury Unit and Large Animal Rescue Trainer Dave King says that the cow was trapped in thick mud and weeds.

“It was a very challenging and technical rescue because she was so stuck,” said Dave.

“We injected water down beside each limb using something called a mud lance, which allowed us to dig up the mud and free each leg.”

“A sad casualty of the drought is that so many animals are trying to get water and they become stuck.”

With help from the Oakville Rural Fire Brigade, NSW SES volunteers rigged up the cow to a rescue glide before pulling her out to a safe spot.

“Once we got her out, she was given some water, molasses and lucerne and a good wash,” said Dave.
