Premier dodges accountability on donation law reform

  • Premier using COVID as cover to dodge important law reform
  • Attending fundraisers, but donation reform not on his mind
  • Commitment needed before next election
  • Peter Gutwein continues to dodge questions on when and whether his government will follow through with a commitment to reform Tasmania’s appalling political donation laws.

Shadow Attorney General Ella Haddad said the Premier is using COVID for cover when he says he’s not turned his mind to the matter.

“The government has been sitting on a report into community views on donation reform since the end of last year.

“It’s ludicrous to expect people to believe that COVID is the real reason they’ve not released it, when they had it months before COVID hit.

“Peter Gutwein continues to use COVID as cover to avoid taking action he doesn’t want to, or disclosing information he doesn’t want to share. It’s the Liberals’ trademark lack of transparency on show.

“The Premier says it’s COVID that’s been keeping him awake at night and uses that to avoid taking action on law reform. I think the real reason is that this reform is simply not on his agenda.

“Meanwhile he hasn’t been too busy to attend Liberal party fundraising events in recent months.

“Tasmanians will find his excuses wearing pretty thin, when it’s obvious it’s not in the Liberals’ interests to reform these laws because they stand to benefit from big donations they intend to keep secret.”
