Pressing fast-forward on energy bill relief to take urgent action on the cost-of-living 20 March 2024

Tas Labor

A Rebecca White Labor Government will press fast-forward on urgent energy bill relief to Tasmanians by bringing forward payments under the State-Federal Energy Bill Relief Fund.

Labor will bring forward the full amount of power price relief so 140,000 households will get $375 off their next bill.

This will bring Tasmania into line with every other state in the nation who are set to receive their bill relief before the end of June 2024. It’s only in Tasmania where the Liberal government has withheld this additional support with no plan to provide it until 2025.

The Energy Bill Relief Fund-developed by the Federal Government and jointly funded with state governments-is there to support households and small businesses with high power prices.

At the last election, the Liberals promised to cap power prices. Jeremy Rockliff broke that promise, and prices soared by nearly $500 as a result.

Now Jeremy Rockliff has been caught out ripping Tasmanians off with bill relief, too.

Tasmanians need urgent action on the cost of living, and this delay does not make sense.

Tasmanians also don’t need to worry about missing out on relief next year. Labor’s promise that Tasmanians will pay a Tasmanian price for Tasmanian will kick in, saving households a further $400 on their power bill from June 2024 onwards.

After 10 years in office, nothing could better demonstrate just how out of touch Jeremy Rockliff and the Liberals have become on the cost of living.

It’s time for a better future, and only Labor will take urgent action on the cost of living.
