Pricing unchanged for NSW container deposit scheme supplier contributions

Exchange for Change

Scheme coordinator Exchange for Change (EfC) today announced it will hold pricing for supplier contributions that fund the NSW container deposit scheme, Return and Earn, for a further 12-month period.

The current fixed price by material type will remain in effect until the January 2028 invoice (inclusive).

EfC is also announcing a range of improvements, effective from 1 July 2027, aimed at making it easier for small beverage suppliers to participate in the NSW scheme including:

  • increasing eligibility for the Small Supplier Program from supply of up to 300,000 containers per year to up to 1 million containers per year
  • the introduction of quarterly reporting in addition to quarterly invoicing for suppliers in its Small Supplier Program
  • the introduction of a new Micro Supplier Program for suppliers of up to 100,000 containers per year, with annual reporting and annual invoicing
  • extended payment terms for small and micro suppliers, from seven days to 28-days.

“We’re pleased to announce these changes today in direct response to feedback from the beverage industry.

“Approximately 86 per cent of currently participating beverage suppliers will, from 1 July next year, benefit from these changes which mean less administration and less effort to participate in the NSW scheme, in addition to the suppliers who will be joining the scheme when it expands from mid-2027.

“We would like to thank industry for your feedback and ongoing participation in the NSW container deposit scheme,” said Danielle Smalley, CEO of Exchange for Change.

Since launching in December 2017, more than 16.6 billion bottles, cans and cartons have been returned by the NSW community through the statewide network of return points.

The NSW scheme operates on a cost-recovery basis and does not make a profit. Beverage suppliers pay a fixed price per material type to fund the scheme. Supplier contribution pricing is calculated based on the scheme’s forecast costs during the pricing period, including the 10c refund to consumers.
