Local young people interested in a career in the visual arts will have the opportunity to get a hands-on insight into their chosen field at Rockhampton Museum of Art, this month, in a first for regional Queensland.

The Visual Field is a professional development program aimed at young and emerging creative people aged 15-18 years. It is delivered by Flying Arts Alliance Inc (Flying Arts) and Institute of Modern Art, and hosted by Rockhampton Museum of Art.

Held over three days (13-15 April), it is the first time the program has been run in regional Queensland. It enables young people from throughout the local area to explore career pathways and connect with like-minded teens through a range of activities including exhibition tours, hands on workshops and panel discussions.

  • Highlights of the program include:
  • Hands-on textile pattern and print workshop with artist, Niloufar Lovegrove
  • Curatorial tour of RMOA’s current exhibitions with curator, Emily Wakeling
  • Artist talk and demonstration with letterpress printmaker, Derek Lamb of Officina Athelstane
  • Panel discussion on career pathways in the arts with staff from Rockhampton Museum of Art, Flying Arts and the Institute of Modern Art
  • Mentoring and feedback on participants’ written exhibition review by arts professionals
  • Digital conversation between Dr Melinda Mann, RMOA First Nations Arts Officer, and artist D Harding

Rockhampton Regional Council Communities and Heritage portfolio spokesperson Cr Drew Wickerson said that the program is a great way for young people who are serious about a career in visual arts, to obtain a deeper awareness and develop valuable skills along the way.

“Rockhampton Museum of Art is proud to host this program for young people of our region. It is a great way to not only give the next generation of arts professionals a practical insight but it also reinforces that it is possible to have a fulfilling career as an artist or arts professional and live in a regional area,” he said.

Applications close on Monday 10 April at 5pm.

Institute of Modern Art

Since 1975 the Institute of Modern Art has been the hub of Brisbane’s contemporary art scene, presenting an annual program of exhibitions, public programs, publications, and offsite programs by Queensland, Australian, and international artists. As one of Australia’s leading independent contemporary art spaces, our vision is to become a truly inclusive, sustainable, and future focused organisation. Through our artistic programs, which include exhibitions, publications, offsite projects, and public programs, we invest in the local, shape the national, and impact the international.
