Progressing Tasmania’s first Wellbeing Framework

Jeremy Rockliff,Premier

The Tasmanian Liberal Government has a strong plan to secure Tasmania’s future and I am committed to delivering on priorities that create more opportunities for more Tasmanians.

We recognise that economic growth alone does not account for a community’s success or progress over time, with health, inclusion and happiness key success factors.

That’s why, as Tasmania’s first Wellbeing Minister, we released the State’s first Child and Youth Wellbeing Strategy to give our young people the best chance in their early years.

Today I announced that we will take the next step to develop Tasmania’s first Wellbeing Framework.

To do this, we will engage with Tasmanians, and ensure their wellbeing priorities are Government priorities, supported by the right targets, measures, policies and services.

Wellbeing can mean different things to different people, but it includes economy, health, education, safety, housing, living standards, environment and climate, social inclusion and connection, identity and belonging, good governance and access and services.

Having a set of wellbeing indicators will help prioritise where we need to invest more of our time, energy and creativity so that we can make a real difference to Tasmanians who currently aren’t sharing in the benefits of our prosperity in the way they should.

Putting wellbeing at the heart of our approach will also lead to improved whole-of-government consideration of complex issues and ensure a cross-agency approach is taken when developing policy and service delivery proposals.

The development of the Framework will include extensive community consultation and will be launched later in the year.

My vision for Tasmania is simple. It is to be a place where everyone feels valued, included, encouraged and supported to be the best they can be.

I firmly believe that through initiatives like a whole of state Wellbeing Framework, bold ambitions, and the responsible Budget management, which has been a hallmark of this Government since we were elected in 2014, we can lead with both our hearts and minds, to secure a future that benefits all Tasmanians.
