Fisheries Minister Peter Tinley has completed a series of online meetings with international investors who are looking for growth opportunities in Western Australia’s aquaculture industry.
Speaking with Japanese investors, who have established links with our State’s overseas trade offices, the Minister promoted the benefits of investing in Western Australia’s sustainable aquaculture industry and the comparative advantages of our extensive pristine coastline, stringent biosecurity, increasing infrastructure and government support.
The discussions come soon after the launch of the new Aquaculture Development Plan for the State, which forecasts the creation of 6,000 direct and indirect jobs in the next 10 years by diversifying our economy through investment in large-scale aquaculture with a focus on premium-quality marine finfish and shellfish.
To further support the growth of WA industries, including aquaculture, the McGowan Government established a dedicated Invest and Trade WA team in 2019. The team is leading a whole-of-government approach to promoting WA as a destination for investment, facilitating investment into the State and assisting industry with its export efforts.
The departments of Primary Industries and Regional Development and Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation have been working with WA trade offices to promote our aquaculture. As stated by Fisheries Minister Peter Tinley:
“As a Government we have invested more than $13 million into growing Western Australia’s aquaculture industry.
“WA has great potential for aquaculture development from our far north to south coast; with established aquaculture development zones, hatcheries and research and development facilities to increase production and exports of premium seafood direct to Asia and the world.
“Global consumer demand for aquaculture produce is expected to grow by more than 30 per cent in the next decade with McGowan Government support for industry growth to help position Western Australia to meet increasing demand for farmed seafood.
“The online discussions with international investors in Japan is just part of our ongoing efforts to expand and develop a sustainable marine aquaculture industry in Western Australia.”
