Propagating natives and bringing in birds at Landcare events

Local bird enthusiasts have learned how to propagate native plants and encourage more Australian birds onto their properties at the first of a suite of free National Landcare Program events being run by Central West Local Land Services.

The Birds in the Bush Propagation workshop attracted more than 20 attendees to Bilby Blooms Native Nursery at Binnaway on Wednesday, 17 February.

Senior Land Services Officer Kelly Leedham said the workshop was one of many events available to locals in the Central West over the coming months as part of the Regional Land Partnerships focusing on natural resource management projects.

“Our native plant propagation workshops have been hugely popular and encourage landholders to restore and improve habitat for threatened bird species on their farms,” Kelly said.

Propagating native plants will be demonstrated at a workshop at Burrendong Botanic Garden and Arboretum on the 16th March 2021.

“We’re also busy preparing for the Back to Bungles Bird Week in April and Autumn Birdwatching competition in May focusing on identifying and protecting the habitat for the endangered Regent Honeyeater and Swift Parrot.”

On the sustainable agriculture front the teams are holding a pre-sowing workshop in conjunction with Central Tablelands Local Land Services in Goolma in March as well as on-farm soil testing workshops and field walks to discuss tropical grass trials at Nyngan, Bogan Gate, Lake Cargelligo and Gulargambone.

“One of the focus areas for the National Landcare Program is how to work with land managers to improve soil quality and equipping the region’s farmers to adapt to changes in climate and markets,” Mrs Leedham said.

Details of upcoming workshops and events can be found on the events section of the Central West Local Land Services webpage www.centralwest.lls.nsw.gov.au or call 1300 795 299 for information.

This project is supported by Central West Local Land Services, through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program.
