Public hospitals plagued by rodents under the Andrews Government

Liberal Party Victoria

A number of Victoria’s hospitals, including the major trauma hospital, The Alfred, are infested with rodents and other vermin according to documents released under Freedom of Information (FOI).

The internal pest inspection reports reveal infestations of mice, rats, cockroaches, bugs, and even foxes, including faeces found on patients’ beds.

Other incidents include cockroaches being found on meal trays, bugs flying around patients waiting to undergo surgery, and mice scurrying around wards.

Acting Shadow Minister for Health, Emma Kealy, said:”The extent of this infestation demonstrates the dire state of one of Australia’s major hospitals. What should be a showpiece is instead a shambles.

“Patients and staff deserve better and it’s not good enough for the Andrews Government to simply blame others for their neglect of Victoria’s health system.

“Staff in our hospitals and healthcare sector more broadly are working as hard as they can, but are being let down by the Andrews Government.

“This infestation doesn’t happen overnight, it is a symptom of Labor sending Victoria broke, and now punishing patients, healthcare professionals and frontline workers for their incompetence.”
