Western Australians have had their say on the new entry statement at the Western Australia-South Australia border, with ‘Ochre and Ocean’ selected as the preferred colour theme for the replacement border sign.
The new structure will replace the existing border sign between Eucla in Western Australia and Border Village in South Australia, which has been a popular photo stop for tourists crossing the Nullarbor for more than three decades.
Across 14 social media posts, 1,117 votes were cast, with ‘Ochre and Ocean’ receiving 888 votes, or 79.5 per cent of the total vote.
The alternative ‘Bush to Beach’ design received 198 votes, or 17.7 per cent, while a small number of respondents suggested combining elements of both colour themes.
Main Roads has worked with key stakeholders, including the Goldfields-Esperance Development Commission, Shire of Dundas, Tourism WA, the Department for Infrastructure and Transport in South Australia, Tourism SA, and the Mirning Traditional Owners, to help finalise design options for the new structure and associated information panels.
The replacement sign will provide a stronger welcome to Western Australia while reflecting the colours and landscape of the region, including the ochre tones of the land, the blue of the ocean and sky, the limestone cliffs, and the Eyre Highway.
Main Roads is progressing engineering drawings for the fabrication of the new 4.5-metre-tall structure, with a tender for the works expected to be advertised later this year. A contract to demolish the existing sign has been awarded to local Kalgoorlie company, Demolition WA. Thjs work will be undertaken in the first week of October
Installation of the new sign is expected to commence by early 2027.
As stated by Transport and Major Infrastructure Minister Rita Saffioti:
“The WA-SA border sign is an iconic stop for the thousands of people travelling across the Nullarbor each year.
“The new design reflects the striking colours of the border landscape and will create a memorable entry for visitors to Western Australia.
“It’s great to see the community having their say on the sign design, and I’m looking forward to seeing it in place next year.”
