Derwent Valley residents are being urged to keep an eye on their letterbox for a life-saving delivery.
Stroke Foundation volunteers will deliver 600 magnets to local households and businesses depicting the F.A.S.T. (Face. Arms. Speech. Time) signs of stroke and the need to dial triple zero (000).
Stroke Foundation Tasmanian State Manager Eamonn O’Toole said it was important everyone knows the signs of stroke.
“Stroke can impact anyone at any time, and it can be treated,” Mr O’Toole said.
“Recognising stroke symptoms and dialling triple zero (000) is the vital first step in accessing life-changing stroke treatment.
“This letterbox drop is one way to raise awareness of stroke and educate the people of the Derwent Valley about what to do if they suspect someone is having a stroke.”
The F.A.S.T test involves asking these questions:
Face – Check their face. Has their mouth drooped?
Arms – Can they lift both arms?
Speech – Is their speech slurred? Do they understand you?
Time – Time is critical. If you see any of these signs, call triple zero (000) straight away.
Most strokes will exhibit at least one of the signs of stroke.
Stroke attacks the brain – the human control centre – changing lives in an instant. When a stroke strikes it can kill up to 1.9 million brain cells per minute. Treatments can stop this damage.
The October 31 letterbox drop is being delivered as part of the F.A.S.T. Community Education program, funded by the Tasmanian Government.
Stroke Foundation will also have an information stand at the market in New Norfolk between 8am and 2pm.
Mr O’Toole encouraged the local community to get behind the campaign, learn the F.A.S.T. signs of stroke and share them with their friends and family.
“Tasmanians are among Australians at highest risk of stroke,” Mr O’Toole said.
“I urge local residents to ensure their magnet goes on the fridge in clear sight as a constant reminder of what to do in a stroke emergency.”
