Putting green back in green

Malvern East residents will shortly have a new piece of open space to enjoy, when we transform the old Malvern RSL lawn bowls green into a temporary park.

Currently fenced for public safety, the under-utilised parcel of land will first be cleared before new turf and seating is added to create a space for the local community to visit for exercise, to relax or to take the dog for a walk.

The Basil Street land has also been added to the Kooyongkoot (Gardiners Creek) masterplan, our blueprint for improvements to a near nine-kilometre stretch of water-side land that extends from Kooyong to Glen Iris.

Gardiners Creek (Kooyongkoot) is a significant waterway within Stonnington that provides an important wildlife corridor within an increasingly urban environment as well as highly valued open space, recreation hubs, Indigenous heritage, public transport links and the Malvern Valley Golf Course.

The plan is for the temporary park to remain for the short- to medium- term with a permanent design for the site to be delivered through the masterplan. Later this year we will share for community feedback concept designs for the site. Once agreed, the designs will form part of the masterplan implementation that will be built in stages over several years.
