Macedon Ranges Shire Council has welcomed the Victorian Government’s decision to refer the proposed Clarkefield development proposal to an independent advisory committee for review and advice.
The decision follows Council’s request for the proposal to undergo a transparent process where evidence can be independently tested and all views properly considered before a decision is made.
Council has consistently maintained that it is not seeking to predetermine the outcome of the proposal. Instead, it has advocated for a fair process that allows decisions to be based on evidence, expert advice and community input.
Mayor Cassy Borthwick said the referral was an important milestone for both Council and Community.
“Council has consistently called for this proposal to be subject to proper scrutiny before any decision is made. We welcome the Minister’s decision to refer it for independent review, ensuring the evidence, planning considerations and community perspectives can be thoroughly examined.
“This is not a final decision, but it is an important step. It recognises that the questions being asked by our community deserve careful and independent consideration.”
The Mayor said the referral reflected the significant contribution made by local residents throughout the process.
“I would like to thank everyone who took the time to learn about the proposal, attend information sessions, undertake their own research, ask questions and make their views known.
“People engaged because they care deeply about the future of Clarkefield and the Macedon Ranges. That participation has helped ensure the conversation remains focused on getting the best possible outcome for current and future generations,” Cr Borthwick said, adding that Council would continue to participate constructively in the process.
