Queensland’s $174 billion construction pipeline mapped in Australian-first Major Projects Portal

Launched last night by Brisbane Economic Development Agency (BEDA), Property Council of Australia and Better Brisbane Alliance, the Queensland Construction Portal (QCP) has been developed with government, BuildSkills Australia, the Queensland Major Contractors Association, RLB and industry.

The portal brings together public and private sector projects valued at $50 million or above, alongside workforce, skills and materials demand, into a single, consolidated platform designed to support smarter planning, investment and delivery.

The portal provides a statewide view of major projects and forecasts future demand for construction workers, skills and materials, helping industry and the State and Federal governments better understand where pressures, opportunities and investment needs are likely to emerge.

New analysis contained within the portal reveals:

  • Queensland has a major project pipeline of $174 billion to 2029-30
  • The six skills facing the strongest demand relative to the available workforce are: 1)

paving and surfacing labourers; 2) crane, hoist and lift operators; 3) concreters; 4) floor

finishers; 5) building and plumbing labourers; 6) engineers.

  • More than 617 major projects are currently identified across the state
  • The pipeline will require significant volumes of concrete, reinforced steel, drywall lining,

structural steel, precast concrete and glass

The construction industry is rising to the challenge. The portal estimates that major project construction across the state rose from $33.64 billion in 2024-25 to $38.31 billion in 2025-26, based on Australian Bureau of Statistics growth rates for Queensland of 13.9% over that period.

Brisbane Economic Development Agency CEO Anthony Ryan said Queensland was entering the most important construction decade in its history.

“For the first time, Queensland’s construction industry will have access to a single source of truth that connects major project pipelines with future workforce, skills and materials demand,” Mr Ryan said.

“BEDA led this work by bringing industry, government and workforce experts together around a shared challenge, because better information and better data ultimately lead to better decisions.”

Property Council Queensland Executive Director Jess Caire said the value of the portal lies in its ability to give industry greater confidence to plan, invest and make informed decisions.

“Good decisions rely on good information. This platform provides a clearer understanding of what’s coming, where activity is concentrated and what that means for workforce, materials and investment decisions.”

“For industry, greater visibility creates greater certainty. It allows businesses to invest in people, capability and capacity with more confidence.

“The portal helps move the conversation from assumptions to evidence, creating a shared understanding of future demand and supporting better outcomes for project delivery.

“Importantly, this is not simply a property or construction industry tool. It is a platform that can help inform investment decisions, workforce planning, policy development and economic growth right across Queensland.”

BEDA Head Economist and General Manager of Investment Dr John Cowie said the portal would provide a stronger evidence base to attract investment and plan for future growth.

“This portal provides a much stronger foundation for decisions about investment, workforce and infrastructure, helping turn this extraordinary period of growth into long-term economic opportunity Queensland,” Dr Cowie said.

“Attracting investment is at the core of our work at BEDA and better data helps us target opportunities, give investors greater confidence and support smarter decisions about where growth can deliver the greatest return for the city.”

Consolidated Properties Group CEO and Chairman Don O’Rorke said greater visibility would help developers and industry confidently deliver the projects reshaping Queensland.

“Developers make investment and delivery decisions years in advance, so visibility of the broader pipeline is incredibly valuable,” Mr O’Rorke said.

“You can’t deliver a pipeline of this scale project by project and organisation by organisation.

“Having a shared view of what is coming helps industry sequence investment, plan procurement and workforce needs and ultimately deliver these transformational projects with greater confidence.”

BuildSkills Australia General Manager – Research and Strategy Dr Robert Sobyra said the construction pipeline would create sustained employment opportunities for Queenslanders.

“This pipeline represents years of work for Queensland’s tradies, engineers and other skilled workers, as well as opportunities right through the businesses and supply chains that support construction,” Mr Sobyra said.

“The challenge is making sure we have the right skills in the right places at the right time.

“Greater visibility of when and where demand will occur helps industry, governments and the training sector plan ahead, build the workforce we need, and make the best use of skills across a very busy pipeline of work.

“That coordination will be critical to making sure Queenslanders benefit from this boom while giving industry the workforce it needs to deliver.”
