Queenslanders encouraged to get behind flood recovery

Premier The Honourable Steven Miles
  • $41,000 in donations supporting Far North Queensland residents affected by floods already received by NGO partners
  • Suncorp and ANZ also contributed $100,000 each to flood recovery efforts
  • Miles Government kickstarted donations with $1.5 million to five NGO partners.

Queenslanders can continue supporting people in Far North Queensland impacted by Ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper and recent flood events by making a donation.

This follows the announcement by the Premier Steven Miles on Wednesday that the Queensland Government would be donating $1.5 million to support the cause, split across five Non-Government Organisations.

The Australian Red Cross, The Salvation Army, UnitingCare Queensland and St Vincent de Paul Society Queensland have each received $350,000, and GIVIT has received $100,000.

More than $41,000 has already been received through the appeal, which will make a significant difference in the lives of those impacted by cyclone damage and flooding.

Suncorp and ANZ have both tipped in $100,000 each toward the flood recovery.

Quotes attributable to the Premier:

“It’s incredible to see the Australian spirit on display, with over $41,000 in donations already received by our five flood recovery partners.

“To every person who has chipped in, even if it is only $1 – thank you.

“This funding will join our government’s $1.5 million contribution, and the donations of companies like ANZ and Suncorp, in making a big difference in the lives of those impacted.

“The recovery has only just begun, and we want to do all we can to support those affected.

“Recovery is a long road, but Queenslanders are a resilient bunch, and we are in this together.

“If you can get behind our mates and donate, now is the time to do so.”

Quotes attributable to Suncorp Group CEO Steve Johnston:

“Suncorp is a proud Queensland-headquartered company and the state’s largest insurer, and we know first-hand the devastating impact extreme weather events have on the community,” Mr Johnston said.

“Suncorp has been protecting homes, businesses and livelihoods in Queensland for more than 100 years and when disaster strikes Suncorp is right there helping Queenslanders pick up the pieces and recover as quickly as possible.

“But the economic impacts from these weather events can be severe, they can destroy lives and livelihoods and take an incredible emotional toll on people’s wellbeing. Recovery can also take months if not years.

“We supported the Premier’s flood appeal after the 2022 east coast floods, and we’re supporting it again for the Far North after ex-TC Jasper.

“We’re also encouraging other corporations to dig deep and support the five charities involved to give as much help to the community as possible.”
