Race to build Olympic legacy

Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) has reaffirmed its support in pursuing opportunities that could benefit the Toowoomba Region from the 2032 Olympic Games.

After approving a secondment arrangement with Toowoomba and Surat Basin Enterprise (TSBE) to compile a Brisbane 2032 Olympics Games Toowoomba Capability Review and begin building key strategic relationships, TRC Mayor Paul Antonio said it was crucial not to lose momentum on this project.

“The current secondment model has delivered positive outcomes in regard to Olympic opportunities to date and helped us better understand what’s required for these type of global events,” Mayor Antonio said.

“While the dream is to host an event, we need to look at the bigger picture which could provide substantial social, economic, environmental and tourism benefits for the Toowoomba Region from both sporting and non-sporting perspectives.

“We know each local government area will be competing in the same space so we need to make sure we put our best foot forward.

“To do this, Council will end the ongoing secondment arrangements and replace this with a contractual arrangement with TSBE. The value of this Olympic support arrangement won’t exceed the current value of support being provided by Council.

“While the secondment has been beneficial, Council believes it can achieve the same outcomes through a longer term contractual arrangement with TSBE.

“A strategic partnership with TSBE offers the best chance to fully mobilise our business, sporting and community groups to explore these opportunities alongside Federal, State and local agencies to look at the potential benefits and map out a course of action for the Region.

“While 2032 may seem a long way into the future, the ground work needs to be done now so it’s important we continue to show our support and push for maximum opportunities for our community.”
