The Borough of Queenscliffe is making the Rail Trail safer for cyclists and joggers, with upgrade works on Bridge Street now under way.
Cr Bob Merriman, Mayor of the Borough of Queenscliffe, joined workers on site this morning to help with asphalting works. “This section of the rail trail has always been a challenge for cyclists, local residents and visitors to navigate,” Cr Merriman said. “By building a proper crossing and a better shared pathway on the site, these works will make it easier for everyone to enjoy the rail trail.”
The construction of a shared pathway and resurfacing of surrounding roads will provide a safer connection for users accessing the Rail Trail at its Queenscliff terminus, as well as complementing the new wharf currently under construction. Local residents will also benefit from asphalting works to improve parking arrangements along Bridge Street.
Council has worked collaboratively with residents living near the site to achieve an outcome that suits everybody. Cr Merriman thanked local residents on Bridge Street for their help designing the project. “Bridge Street residents have been extremely helpful in getting the design of this project right,” Cr Merriman said. “Thank you to all our local residents who have worked with us and for your patience as we complete this upgrade.”
Works are expected to be completed in the coming weeks, and were funded with assistance from the Fixing Country Roads program. The Borough of Queenscliffe has also used this program to complete upgrades to parking and safety in Bowen Road in Point Lonsdale, drainage improvements to Ocean Road in Point Lonsdale, and design bike safety upgrades on Murray Road in Queenscliff.
