Rare opportunity to develop historic Fremantle college

  • Expressions of interest sought for Fremantle Technical College
  • Unique development opportunity includes heritage-listed Federation and Victorian era buildings
  • Prime South Terrace location in premier tourism precinct
  • Lands Minister Ben Wyatt today called for expressions of interest for the sale and redevelopment of the former Fremantle Technical College site in the heart of the port city.

Located opposite the iconic Fremantle Markets, the historic property offers heritage-listed buildings on more than 2,400 square metres of prime land and represents a significant redevelopment opportunity for the right investor.

The college site has been a part of the fabric of Fremantle since the late 1800s and is within walking distance of key tourist attractions including the Fremantle Prison, Round House, Maritime Museum and Fishing Boat Harbour.

The State Government is seeking a proponent who has the vision to reactivate and restore this underutilised heritage asset, building on the regeneration of Fremantle’s city centre and successfully demonstrating heritage conservation and adaptive reuse.

Conservation and maintenance works were recently completed to prepare the character buildings for sale. Any future redevelopment plans will need to ensure the heritage value is retained and celebrated.

Expressions of interest close at 2pm on March 4, 2020. For more information and agent details, visit https://www.dplh.wa.gov.au/information-and-services/crown-land/land-asset-sales

As stated by Lands Minister Ben Wyatt:

“This is a genuinely rare and unique opportunity to breathe new life into one of Fremantle’s most recognisable streetscapes and be part of the revitalisation of the Fremantle City Centre.

“The character buildings present an array of possibilities for reuse and the location lends itself to any number of potential uses for the astute investor. The heritage values of this Fremantle landmark also present opportunities for an exemplary design outcome.

“Potential buyers will need to ensure that the heritage values are retained and demonstrate they are able to work sympathetically with the site’s century-old character to create a new destination for Fremantle that both residents and visitors can enjoy.”

As stated by Fremantle MLA Simone McGurk:

“We have seen a number of great developments and places revitalise Fremantle recently including the National Hotel renovations, the opening of the Arbor and Old Synagogue and the impending completion of the Kings Square redevelopment.

“Fremantle boasts some of the State’s most significant heritage buildings and it is so exciting to see these spaces reimagined for future generations to discover.

“The Fremantle Technical College site is such a familiar but underutilised part of our city’s fabric. I am really pleased to see the future development plans and activation of this site.”
