Professor Bruce Armstrong is one of Australia’s leading cancer epidemiologists. He has dedicated his life to cancer research and improving cancer screening. In recognition of his incredible achievements, we have recently named our Career Achievement Award after Professor Bruce Armstrong.
About Professor Bruce Armstrong
Professor Bruce Armstrong is a retired university academic and public health physician with a long and distinguished career in cancer control. He is a world authority in cancer epidemiology and has a particular interest in the efficacy, effectiveness, and delivery of cancer screening services.
Dr Armstrong has been integral to the development and implementation of Australia’s three national cancer screening programs, including:
- Chairing the Cancer Council WA committee that successfully called for the establishment of pilot breast cancer screening in WA.
- Improving our understanding of the causes of cancer.
- Leading the way to campaign against harmful products like tobacco.
His significant career achievements are well recognised. The Australian Academy of Science notes that, “Dr Armstrong is arguably the most outstanding public health scientist in the history of Australian epidemiology.”
Renaming our Cancer Research Career Achievement Award
The ‘Cancer Research Career Achievement Award’ is Cancer Council WA’s most prestigious personal award. It recognises and celebrates the achievement of a senior cancer researcher who has a history of significant achievement in the research field and a strong record of leadership in administration, advocacy, and promotion of cancer research. Valued up to $20,000, it is awarded to the West Australian researcher who has made the most outstanding contribution to cancer research over the past 3 years.
For these reasons, this award was deemed the most appropriate to name after Professor Armstrong, due to his significant career achievements in cancer control. We are pleased to announce that the ‘Cancer Research Career Achievement Award’ has now been renamed to the ‘Professor Bruce Armstrong Cancer Research Career Achievement Award’.
We are looking forward to continuing to support local West Australian cancer researchers, while recognising the achievements of Professor Bruce Armstrong through this award.
