Touch football teams from across Regional Queensland will touch down at the Cyril Connell Fields in Rockhampton this weekend to fight for the championship title at the Red Rooster Carnival.
With a record-breaking number of 150 teams set to participate in the two-day sporting event, Rockhampton Regional Council Mayor Tony Williams said the weekend is guaranteed to be a thrilling spectacle of sporting excellence.
“The Red Rooster Carnival is a cherished and longstanding sporting tradition that has been a highlight in our local community for over two decades,” Mayor Williams said.
“Council is proud to sponsor this fantastic event once again, with the Rockhampton Touch Association receiving $5,295 towards the carnival through Council’s Community Assistance Program (CAP).
“With over 5,000 avid competitors and spectators expected to attend the carnival, the influx of visitors to our region over this weekend promises a significant economic upturn for our local businesses and tourism sector.”
Communities and Heritage Councillor Drew Wickerson said the Community Assistance Program continues to prove its worth year after year, supporting some incredible events and projects.
“In the last two rounds of this program alone, the Community Assistance Program has gone on to help 52 local community groups by delivering over $135,000 in funding towards local projects and initiatives,” Cr Wickerson said.
“Over the years, we have been able to support some fantastic initiatives and help our community put ideas into action.
“Whether it is supporting recreational activities, community sports events, venue hire, or new equipment for community groups – there are plenty of opportunities for local community groups to benefit from this program.”
Rockhampton Touch Association’s Michelle Welfare said the Red Rooster Carnival will see players compete in both girl and boy divisions from Under 10s up to Under 17s.
“With teams primarily composed of friend groups rather than clubs, the event encourages inclusivity and represents the fun and social aspects of sports,” Ms Welfare said.
“The carnival is open to everyone, irrespective of prior touch football experience, promoting a welcoming environment for all participants.
“Throughout the weekend, teams from Rockhampton, Yeppoon, Mackay, Theodore, Moranbah, Calliope, Bundaberg, Gladstone and Biloela will participate in approximately five rounds of games, concluding with the exciting finals where each team will vie for victory in their respective divisions.”
The Red Rooster Carnival kicks off tomorrow Saturday 4 November with the finals to take place on Sunday 5 November.
The second round of the 2023-24 Community Assistance Program will open 15 January 2024.
