Reducing digital divide for our learners

Roger Jaensch,Minister for Education, Children and Youth

Every student in a public school should have access to the resources, infrastructure and opportunities they need to succeed.

That’s why the Tasmanian Liberal Government is investing an additional $5 million to bolster the pool of devices in our public schools, ensuring families who are unable to provide this technology can continue to support their child’s learning at home.

The additional devices will include laptops, tablets and internet dongles.

Our experience over the past two years has identified the need to be flexible and ensure Tasmanian students have the necessary tools and technology available to allow access to remote learning.

All public schools have the capacity to support students who need access to a device or the internet, but we want to continue to reduce the digital divide to ensure that all students have equal access to technology for learning.

The additional devices will begin to be rolled out before the end of the financial year and will be distributed to identified schools on a needs basis.

Students will be loaned the devices through a take-home borrowing system.

This investment will also be used to support whole of family connectivity, inclusion and digital literacy more broadly.

Ensuring all students have access to this technology will ensure our learners have the opportunity to develop the skills and confidence they need to reach their full potential.
