The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and Crown Lands have commenced the removal of the Walk on Water boardwalk at the Tweed Heads Historic Site and Ukerebagh Nature Reserve.
Removal is expected to take approximately 4 weeks to complete.
The Walk on Water boardwalk was significantly damaged during the 2022 floods and has been closed due to public safety risks.
An independent structural engineering report completed post-floods concluded that the boardwalk is structurally unsound and at the end of its serviceable life.
NPWS and Crown Lands understand the importance that continuing access to this area has for the community.
A working group has been established with representatives from NPWS, Crown Lands, Tweed Byron Local Aboriginal Land Council and Tweed Aboriginal Cooperative Society Limited to investigate the feasibility of a replacement boardwalk.
The walking track within the Tweed Heads Historic Site will remain open to the public.
