Legislation to double Tasmania’s renewable generation to a global-leading target of 200 per cent of our current needs by 2040 has today passed the Lower House.
This brings our nation-leading target one step closer to becoming law and confirms our commitment to the sector that has the potential to deliver Tasmania billions of dollars of investment and thousands of jobs.
The ambitious target will be supported by our world-class solar, water, and wind resources, with the legislation specifying that any future renewable energy source will need to be declared by the Minister for Energy through a disallowable instrument.
This will ensure both Houses of Parliament have the opportunity to review and approve any future renewable energy sources that count towards the TRET.
Tasmania is already taking the lead in clean and reliable energy and we are fast approaching our target to be 100% self-sufficient in renewable energy by 2022 – a feat achieved by very few countries in the world.
Tasmania has what the nation wants and needs in affordable, reliable and clean renewable energy, and the passing of this legislation is another key plank in the Tasmanian Renewable Energy Action Plan that outlines our vision and suite of actions to develop renewable energy generation in Tasmania over the coming 20 years.
Our number one priority is to create jobs, rebuild the economy and protect the Tasmanian way of life, and today marks another important step in our State’s renewable energy future.
