After a three-year break, WA’s biggest community run, HBF Run for a Reason, is back on Sunday 21 May. Up to 35,000 participants are expected to take to the streets this year, raising vital funds for their charity of choice.

One of these participants is cancer researcher, Hao Luo (David). David is a Post-doctoral Research Fellow at Edith Cowan University (ECU) Exercise and Medicine Research Institute (EMRI).

Thanks to our supporters, we have been able to fund the great work done at EMRI for the past 20 years. With this funding, EMRI has become a leading research institute for exercise and medicine in cancer care.

David and his team are working on the first-ever clinical exercise trial (known as EXPAN) for pancreatic cancer here in Australia. They are looking into exercise as a safe and effective form of medicine during pre-operative therapy for pancreatic cancer patients, and whether exercise can improve tolerance of chemotherapy and radiography.

David has chosen to participate in the HBF Run for a Reason as part of the Cancer Council WA team to raise funds to support cancer research in Western Australia, and to promote exercise as medicine in the prevention and management of cancer.

“I have signed up to run the Specsavers 12km. This will be my first time participating in the HBF Run for a Reason, so I would like to choose a distance I am confident in to start with.”

A huge thank you to David for sharing our vision and selecting us as his beneficiary for the HBF Run for a Reason and we wish him the best of luck with the run. With his contribution, we will be able to fund more cancer researchers in WA and support more Western Australians affected by cancer.

Join us for Perth’s biggest fitness fundraising challenge and sign up today. Run for fun, jog for joy, push yourself, believe in yourself, fundraise, and feel good.
