Resources Minister Madeleine King could save herself some work on changes to consultation requirements for offshore gas projects by simply supporting a bill I’ve already introduced to Parliament.
Minister King reportedly flagged changes to provide clarity on consultation and address industry complaints about approvals timelines.
As stated by Greens portfolio holder for First Nations, Resources, Trade, Tourism and Sport, and Yamatji Noongar woman, Senator Dorinda Cox:
“Minister King appears to be the chief cheerleader for fossil fuel companies, yet another example of the government being beholden to climate wrecking companies under the ‘state capture’ spell.
“There is an easy ‘here’s one I prepared earlier’ bill that Minister King can use to solve the problem, my Protecting the Spirit of Sea Country bill which will ensures the right people are consulted at the right time and that consultation meets an appropriate standard and is genuine in intent. It also ensures that underwater and intangible cultural heritage is identified in offshore project proposals and environment plans.
“We don’t need more of the same, where the resources industry is given a big golden free kick by governments, paving the way for environmental and cultural destruction – that’s what led to these projects being delayed and Traditional Owners having to attempt to slay the giants through Federal Court action and injunctions.
“The resources sector needs to do better. If investors are scared off by the delays, that’s a lesson for companies like Santos and Woodside – do the right thing and engage with Traditional Owners in an appropriate, timely and meaningful way and respect that underwater First Nations cultural heritage is important.”
