The Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security
(PJCIS) has commenced a review of the re-listing of four organisations as terrorist organisations under the Criminal Code Act 1995 (the Criminal Code).
The organisations are:
- al-Qa’ida in the Arabian Peninsula – a Sunni extremist group located in Yemen. The group is an affiliate of al-Qa’ida which adheres to global jihadist ideology and follows an extreme anti-Western interpretation of Islam.
- al-Qa’ida in the Indian Subcontinent – an affiliate of al-Qa’ida, established to advance al-Qa’ida’s ideology in South Asia. The group’s objectives are to prepare Muslims for military jihad against their enemies, to liberate Muslim lands now ruled by non-Muslims, and to revive the Islamic caliphate.
- Islamic State in Libya – an affiliate of Islamic State that adheres to global jihadist ideology and follows an extreme anti-Western interpretation of Islam. The group promotes sectarian violence against those who do not agree with their ideology.
- Islamic State Sinai Province – a Sunni extremist group located in the Sinai Peninsula. The group is an affiliate of Islamic State and follows an extreme anti-Western interpretation of Islam, promoting extreme violence against those who do not agree with its interpretations of Islam.
Under section 102.1A of the Criminal Code, the Committee may review listings of terrorist organisations and report its findings to each house of the Parliament within the 15 sitting day disallowance period.
Members of the public are welcome to make submissions to this review. Submissions should be provided no later than 5pm Friday, 10 January 2020.
