Road Blitz Underway On The Hamilton Highway

Significant road rebuilding works are underway on the Hamilton Highway near Stonehaven to provide drivers with a smoother, safer and stronger road.

As part of the Andrews Labor Government’s record investment in regional roads, a 1.1 kilometre section of road, west of Pollocksford Road, is being repaired.

These works will ensure the road is smoother and safer for the more than 5000 drivers who use this section of road every day, as well as the wool, grain and timber industries that rely on the highway as a freight connection between Melbourne and south western Victoria.

While works are underway, lane closures will be in effect and the speed limit will be reduced to 40km/h. Drivers are advised to expect minor delays.

When complete, the 100km/h speed limit on this section of road will be reinstated.

This upgrade, part of the Labor Government’s $84 million maintenance blitz in south western Victoria, is just one of many jobs planned for the Hamilton Highway this summer.

Works are well underway on the highway near Caramut, where about two kilometres of the road is being reconstructed and strengthened, with additional works underway to improve the shape of intersections at Caramut-Chatsworth Road and Glenthompson-Caramut Road.

The intersection of Burnside Road and the Hamilton Highway will also be upgraded in early 2019 with the installation of a dedicated turning lane into Burnside Road.

These upgrades follow extensive works already delivered on the Hamilton Highway between Geelong and Cressy, as part of a $10 million investment by the Australian and Victorian governments.

As noted by Minister for Roads and Road Safety Jaala Pulford

“This upgrade is a real win for the communities and industries that rely on the Hamilton Highway every day.

“Since coming to office we’ve doubled spending on road maintenance and from now on regional Victorians will get the attention they deserve with a dedicated agency solely focused on fixing country roads.”

As noted by Member for Western Victoria Gayle Tierney

“Once complete, this important work will mean that we can safely put the speed limit back up to 100km/h.”

“While works are underway, it’s important that everyone heeds the traffic management on site and slows down – the safety of drivers and our workers is our top priority.”
