Road safety hammered home in south-east

State Highway Patrol South-East along with the Air Wing detected 12 motorists drink driving as part of a road policing operation targeting speeding, distracted, impaired and unauthorised drivers.

Operation Hammerhead, which was in effect from 8pm on Thursday 14 July through to 12am on Monday 18 July, saw the Air Wing assist police on the ground in identifying vehicles of note.

As part of the operation police found 128 speeding drivers, 25 of whom lost their licence, 8 drug drivers, and impounded 16 vehicles.

The alleged highest speed detected was 242km/h.

Of the 12 drivers processed for drink driving, the highest result was .133.

Police are warning all motorists to not become complacent with significant and highly visible patrols to continue.

Quotes attributed to Acting Sergeant Harry Lazarou:

“The number of speeding drivers detected continues to present a significant risk to road users each day.

“While we know most Victorians make smart decisions when on the roads, there is still an unacceptable number of motorists who blatantly disregard the safety of others by continuing to speed or driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

“The success of the Operation Hammerhead looks likely to have cemented its place permanently on the State Highway Patrol roster.”
