Road safety improvement works to commence

NT Government

The Territory Labor Government is making roads safer.

New traffic signals will be installed at the intersection at McMillans Road and Kalymnos Drive to enhance safety for all road users.

The upgrades will improve the flow of traffic entering and exiting via McMillans Road and will improve road safety for turning vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.

Dedicated signalised pedestrian and cyclist crossings will also be constructed across Kalymnos Drive and McMillans Road.

Local business Nightcliff Electrical is undertaking the works with construction due to start on Monday 17 October 2022.

The majority of the works will be undertaken during the daytime, with restricted hours to reduce the impact on road users.

Traffic management will be in place during construction.

Road users, residents and business owners are asked to like and follow RoadReportNT here on Facebook for up to date information as works progress.

The works are jointly funded by the Australian and Northern Territory governments.

Quotes from Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics, Eva Lawler

“Kalymnos Drive is a key access road to the suburb of Karama, Karama Shopping Plaza and Manunda Terrace Primary School and experiences high volumes of traffic. By installing lights at this busy intersection we will be reducing the risk to road users.

“Road safety has to be a priority for every road user. We have seen too many people lose their lives on the roads, and many more injuries and crashes that have flow-on effects in the community, impacting families, workplaces, insurance, the health system and more. We provide safety upgrades to reduce the risks on our roads – I remind road users to be diligent, follow the rules and don’t put your life or others at risk.”

Quotes from Member for Karama, Ngaree Ah Kit

“As the local Member and a long-term resident of Karama, I have been advocating for traffic lights at the McMillans Road end of Kalymnos Drive ever since they were installed at the Vanderlin Drive end and had an immediate safety impact.

“As we have seen at the Vanderlin Drive intersection, traffic lights will reduce risk and enhance safety for all road users – motorists, cyclists and pedestrians alike.

“I look forward to being able to walk from my home down Kalymnos Drive and safely cross over McMillans Road to attend the many community events that are held on Batten Road.”
