Rockliff’s cost of living inaction failing Tasmanians

Tasmanian Labor

Premier Rockliff’s refusal to take action on the cost of living is failing Tasmanians.

Today’s Consumer Price Index data released by the ABS, shows that inflation in Hobart is now at 6.9 per cent, with many Tasmanian families continuing to go backwards with the rising cost of groceries, power prices and housing.

In the 12 months to March 2023, electricity costs rose 13 per cent, the cost of housing rose 9.1 per cent and key food items like fruit, bread and dairy products recorded rises of between 10 and 15 per cent.

Last year the Liberal Government twice voted down Labor’s legislation to cap power price increases at 2.5 per cent, which would have saved the average household $500 and provided Tasmanians with real relief from soaring power costs.

The Liberals have been in office for 10 years. If they were ever going to take meaningful action on the cost of living crisis, they would have done so by now.

Sensible financial management, health, housing and cost of living are key priorities for Labor and a Tasmanian Labor Government would immediately get to work fixing the mess the Liberal Government has created during its 10 years in office.
